You know, every now and then I come across posts or
comments written by people who gave up, packed their bags and left the country
because they couldn't handle it anymore. Who go on to write such ridiculous
statements... for example, "The merciless crimes and violence committed
out of pure greediness for power, in South Africa, breaks my heart! Thank you
Australia for accepting me into your beautiful country!" (sic)
And this: "u should download news 24 and read once a
day and then u can see EVERY SINGLE DAY someone is raped, murdered, stabed,
high jacked and how our leaders are involved in corruption while we currently
have 23 million unemployed people (close to the population of Australia) and
even more who live shacks and u think SA is a great place to live." (sic)
And I must say, it bugs me more than it should. For
starters, I am well aware of what goes on in the country, with regards to
crime, rape, murder, vandalism, bribery… you name it. I get it. I really do,
and please do not think for one second that in this post I’m trying to dismiss
any of it, because believe me when I say it IS a serious problem… but what many
fail to realize is that South Africa IS in fact a developing country, and a
political revolution is just around the corner. This country is so up in the
air at the moment, and so much has happened over the past year or so, it’s
ridiculous.
I also understand why so many South Africans decide to
leave and move to other places in the world to better their futures and seek
safety and comfort. HOWEVER, if you decide to leave; do it quietly. And more
importantly, once you’ve left – leave it ALONE. There isn’t much more to be
said if you choose to leave… We get that you weren’t happy here. We get that
there is far too much crime going on, and we understand… BUT PLEASE STOP
bringing it up. South Africa has SO MUCH to offer the world, but how on earth
do you expect us to grow and change if the rest of the world was brainwashed by
YOU that it is crime ridden and not worth a second glimpse.
I know first-hand what it’s like to be constantly told
how terrible my country was, because for a short period of time I decided to pack
my bags and do the same as the rest of you. I left. And boy did I get it… “I
don’t know how you could ever live there…” “Oh you’re from SOUTH AFRICA? Shame.”
The list goes on. It was awful. But the
great thing about being away was that I learned to appreciate the country I
came from while I wasn’t in it. I got the chance to see my country for what it
really was… an incredibly beautiful place. Our people are kind and friendly.
Our animals are taken care of and treasured (as much as possible at least). Our
culture is rich and diverse. Our food is spectacular. And our spirit is
formidable. We have issues of plenty, but we have our graces too. And no
ex-Saffa could ever take that way from this place.
“It is fact people get killed for a cellphone.
Babies are shoved down toilets and left to die. 83 year old women are raped and
murdered. Thats not media governing me its the lifestyle us south africans live
in.” (sic)–this I enjoyed…. Apparently this is the Lifestyle I live in… Well, may I say… not really sugar.
This isn’t my lifestyle, sure I’m a bit more cautious, but I’m a sissy
sometimes… I certainly wouldn’t consider this a Lifestyle. And I don’t really see why you’d throw me in that
statement with you there, “us south Africans” No. You. Maybe some others, but
mostly just you. I think you should move if you’re so gosh darn unhappy.
Here’s a fun fact. You will find crime wherever you go.
People experience terrible things all the time. Regardless of where in the
world they are, it just happens unfortunately. But blaming it on an entire nation
of people is just petty… And silly if you ask me.
While I was abroad, travelling all over the place by
myself… I struggled to meet new people that had the same openness and kind-heartedness
that many South Africans did. While in the tube stations in England, one of my
bags tore apart all over the terminal just before my train was about to leave…
and everyone simply stood over my belongings and carried on walking.
While on my 2nd last flight back home, exiting
the plane with 3 large carry-on bags, struggling to get down the aisle to enter
the airport for a 4 hour layover in Dubai… a kind gentleman offered to carry my
bags, and then kept me company for all 4 hours I had to wait. He bought me a
drink and we spoke about his loving family that he missed terribly back in
England. He carried my bags to my terminal and waved farewell with a smile on
his face. He was a South African.
I’m not saying we’re better than anyone. Nor am I saying
our good outweighs the bad… But the point I hope I’ve made today, is that
people should stop overlooking all the good qualities we have. We are a united
Nation… We struggle together, we mourn together, we celebrate together and we
all love our country. So please, if you are an ex-South African… do some of us
a favour… and stop posting shitty comments about this incredible place. We’re
not your problem anymore… So cut it out. And enjoy your new beautiful country
that you clearly love so much.
Thanks.
